FAA recommends recommend replacing mufflers on any reciprocating engine-powered airplane with more than 1,000 hours on the muffler The FAA recently tasked Wichita State University to conduct research on carbon monoxide safety issues as they apply to general aviation products. The report states that when CO poisoning was the related factor in accidents, the muffler system was the top source. Furthermore, 92 percent of the incidents had a muffler with more than 1,000 hours of service life. Due to this report, the FAA has recently issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin in which they recommend replacing mufflers on any reciprocating engine-powered airplane with more than 1,000 hours on the muffler.
